Last year, during Women’s History Month and shortly before COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic, we introduced you to our Hampton Roads executive leadership team: Bon Secours’ first and only all-female market leadership team.
The founding Sisters of our ministry were a group of religious women who broke barriers by working together to provide good help to the poor, sick, vulnerable and underserved. Much like this strong group, our Hampton Road market leaders were recently challenged to care for their community in a very similar way during COVID-19.
A year later, we decided to check in with this all-female team to reflect on the accomplishments they are most proud of during this unprecedented time.

“2020 was such an unusual year for all of us as leaders, women, parents, individuals. I’m proud of the work that we have been able to accomplish in caring for our community and one another. We showed the agility to develop new policies, protocols and practices that kept our teams safe and healthy – and available to care for the community of COVID-19 patients. We came together, regionally, to support one another through sharing resources and information – collaborating on projects like #MaskUp757 and regional vaccinations. All of these professional demands happened at the same time that we were facing personal challenges at home – protecting our families, adapting to new childcare and school schedules. The pressures of being a health care provider and working parent have never been higher and the need to provide support for one another has never been greater.”

“In March of 2020, the pandemic significantly changed the way we approached fundraising for the year. We pivoted to focus on securing philanthropic dollars to safely care for patients during the COVID-19 pandemic and to assist our associates who were negatively impacted as well. The outpouring of support from the community – in contributions and in-kind donations – was wonderful and means so much to our staff and patients. Thanks to the generosity of so many, we were able to adapt to and meet an unprecedented need in our communities.”

“I started in my role as president on March 2, 2020 and we launched our first official COVID-19 Incident Command meeting on March 12, 2020 as the world was changing around us. We were also able to continue our focus on exceptional patient safety and quality – improving our Leapfrog score to an A in fall of 2021 and achieving a 3-Star CMS Rating to be published next month.
