Congratulations to Seconds Unlimited, the Bon Secours Rappahannock General Hospital-owned thrift shop, for wrapping up last year with record sales numbers! With one week remaining in 2021, Seconds Unlimited celebrated hitting their record annual sales number of $250,000. They then reported a final 2021 year-end sales of $255,735.
“This is an amazing accomplishment for Seconds Unlimited, and in turn, for the hospital and the community,” J. Alan Bailey, Rappahannock General Hospital vice president administrator, shares. “Seconds Unlimited is such an incredible community effort. For more than 40 years, every item the community has donated to the thrift shop is then resold to other members of the community. One small transaction at a time, major projects and improvements for the hospital are being purchased by the community, for the community.”
The store’s business model depends on donations of gently used clothing and household goods, which are then sold at affordable prices, sometimes ranging as low as $3 to $5 per item. This extremely modest price point of the items sold makes it especially remarkable that Seconds Unlimited has recently pledged $500,000 toward The Campaign for Rappahannock General Hospital to support the first major renovation since the hospital opened in 1977.
This significant gift from Seconds Unlimited isn’t the first of its kind for the bustling small thrift shop adjacent to the Tri-Star parking lot. Seconds Unlimited has a long history of donating funds to Rappahannock General Hospital for projects of all scales that directly benefit patient care. The most recent of these occurred in early 2018, when Rappahannock General Hospital’s imaging department obtained the area’s first 3D mammography unit thanks to the generosity of Seconds Unlimited Thrift Shop and community donations to the Rappahannock General Hospital Foundation.
According to Deborah Hall Silvus, manager at Seconds Unlimited, the shop closed for six months in 2020 at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and has been booming ever since the reopening.
“The donations just keep pouring in. Customers love the improvements we’ve made to the shop, including freshening up the look and adding a credit card reader, and our enthusiastic team of volunteers have never been more committed to the success of the shop,” Deborah shares. “Our team feels such a great sense of pride to be able to raise so much money for such a worthy cause. And we could always use a few more friendly faces to help out.”
Individuals interested in volunteering with Second Unlimited can inquire at the store during business hours. Seconds Unlimited is located at 77 Irvington Road, Kilmarnock, Va. and is open Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“We are so grateful for the dedication demonstrated by Deborah and her amazing team of volunteers,” J. Alan Bailey adds. “Thank you to the Seconds Unlimited team, and to our community for making these efforts possible.”
