Hot summer sun usually means a desire to stay cool in the water.
Whether a trip to the beach or an afternoon at the lake in a boat, we want to make sure you and your family stay safe. Don’t let preventable accidents ruin your summertime fun. In fact, our team members have some tips on how to make sure everyone stays safe while cooling off.
“According to the CDC, every day about 10 people die from unintentional drowning,” Steven Newman, MD, a primary care provider at Bon Secours St. Francis, shares. “Drowning ranks fifth among the leading causes of unintentional injury and death in the country. Water safety is therefore critical and should always be on our minds as we enjoy the pool, the lake and the ocean.”
Here are some tips on how to stay safe while boating and in the water.
Boating Safety Tips:
- Make sure your boat is properly equipped with all appropriate safety equipment.
- Wear a properly fitted Coast Guard-approved life jacket when you and your loved ones are on the water.
- Check the weather beforehand.
- Don’t overload the boat with people or supplies.
- Never operate a boat while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Water Safety Tips:
- If a child is missing, check the water first.
- Watch kids when they are in or around water. Don’t get distracted by reading, talking to others or your phone.
- Sign your kids up for formal swimming lessons, as they can help protect them from drowning.
- Teach children to swim with a partner and to never go near or in water without an adult present.
- Always have Coast Guard-approved personal flotation devices (PFDs) on hand. Things such as water wings, noodles and other swimming aids are fun toys but not a replacement for PFDs.
- Always have a phone close by to call if there is an emergency. Also, learn how to perform CPR.
