Coughing and Sneezing: Proper Etiquette to Prevent the Spread of COVID-19

COVID-19 is mainly spreading through respiratory droplets from an infected person when they cough, sneeze, or talk. This virus can also spread when someone touches a surface that has been infected and then touches their mouth, nose or eyes.

Practicing good coughing and sneezing etiquette is a key step you can take to keep others safe. Even if you don’t have any illness symptoms, you could be infected and spread this virus without knowing it. Thus, it is important for everyone to practice good hygiene habits at this time.

When coughing or sneezing, be sure to:

  1. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue. Throw used tissues in the trash right away.
  2. Wash or sanitize your hands after each cough or sneeze.
  3. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into the inside of your elbow, not your hands.

Frequent handwashing is an important habit in general, especially before eating or handling food. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if you are out of the house and soap and water are not available.

In addition to handwashing, also practice these preventive actions:

  • Social distance from others by staying at least six feet away
  • Wear a face mask in public, especially in situations where social distancing is hard to maintain
