When you think of a massage, you probably think of a luxury, once-in-a-while kind of treat.
But massages are way more than that these days. In fact, massage therapy has an endless number of medical benefits that are often overlooked.
Just ask Lynne Hawkins (pictured above, right). She’s a licensed massage therapist working inside the Bon Secours St. Francis Therapy Center at SportsClub Congaree and is available to help you take advantage of these benefits.
“In today’s society, we see so much stress. Everything seems to cause stress, and no one really knows what to do about it,” Lynne explains. “Stress can lead to other physical illnesses, such as high blood pressure and gut issues. If we can start by monitoring and reducing stress levels, we can help deter other illnesses and issues.”
That’s where massage therapy comes in.
Lynne says massage therapy can bring relief to those who are struggling, as it has many physical and mental benefits which include improved circulation, a strengthened immune response, decreased anxiety and increased relaxation.
“Seeing a massage therapist on a regular basis is important, and it’s comforting to know that your first visit won’t fix everything,” Lynne says. “It may be hard for you to relax at first, but your confidence and comfortability will increase with each visit. In order to maintain a sense of relief, you need to keep coming and getting it done.”
You don’t need a specific reason to go and get a massage either.
“The last two years of the COVID-19 pandemic have greatly increased the stress factors in one’s life – especially for parents,” Lynne shares. “From school closures to vaccine decisions, it has really increased the amount of stress parents are used to. As for those who work behind computers all day or have to stand on hard floors for long periods of time, you have a higher risk of posture distortion. This is something massage therapy can help relieve.”
While Lynne is strictly a massage therapist, she has worked in our physical therapy department since she was first hired by our ministry almost 15 years ago.
“I love what I do, and I love working here. The relaxation aspect is great, but I enjoy being able to help bring relief to those who need it, as well as help the body ‘correct’ itself.”
